Do you know when did I first time realize that it was important to read Mark Twain`s novel? It was when I had a first date with Betty, a student of English Literature.
She talked as she knew everything about novels. And as a boy, it is important too, to be look so smart when you face a girl, isn`t it?
“Tom Sawyer is my most favorite character of Twain`s novel, have you ever read?” She said.
“Of course, I love it”, it was the answer I often used to say.
And then Betty spoke a lot about Mark Twain`s books for ours. I just listened. And sometimes I nodded, pretended to be looking interested. Whereas I even did not know who was Mark Twain, was he a writer or an astronaut?
After finished her story, she asked, “By the way, who is the writer do you love most?”
“George Best”, that name was jumped from my mouth rapidly.
There was confusion in her eyes. “Wasn`t he a football player, was he?”, Betty said. I had been busted almost, never thought that she had known him well.
“Of course not, I mean another George Best. His book is so rare. You will never read it, want you know the story?” I asked. She nodded.
“It is about a boy who has a date. The girl talks too much about novels he never read. He even doesn`t know anything about literature. However, he pretends as if he has already read them and interested so much. Do you know why does he pretend? Because he loves the girl so much”
Betty`s face was being red. “Did George Best write about a stupid liar boy who is sitting in front of me right now?” She cried angrily.
If you guess Betty had given me a hit into my face, you are wrong. Because then she smiled and said, “You should not pretend like that, I love you whatever stupid you are”, then she kissed me sweetly. That was the first beautiful “stupid” I loved to hear.
